Introduction. Wound healing is a mechanism to regenerate or repair tissue in the body. Wound healing consists of four phases that are haemostasis, inflammation, proliferation and tissue remodeling. The process of wound healing can be accelerated using traditional medicines, such as Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis) and honey. The aim of this study is to evaluate wound healing and antiinflammatory response of combination of water extract of A.cordifolia and honey in Wistar rats.
Methods. Water extract of A.cordifolia was made boiled water for 30 minutes. Animals model were divided into 6 groups: control group; honey at dose of 8 g/kg bw, extract group at dose of 65 mg/kg bw, combination 1 (extract:honey=25%:75%), combination 2 (extract:honey=50%:50%), and combination 3 (extract:honey=75%:25%). Wound healing assay was done using excision wounds. The antiinflammatory response was evaluated using carrageenan-induced paw edema in rats, using Na-diclofenac at a dose of 4.5 mg/kg bw as a comparator.
Results. The results showed that honey, water extract of A.cordifolia, and all of their combination gave faster onset of healing wound compared to control group (p<0.05). The wound healing of control group was on day 18, the honey group was on day 17, the extract group was on day 11, the combination 1 group was on day 12, the combination 2 group was on day 13, and the combination 3 group was on day 10. Histopathological studies showed significant wound healing process compared to control group. Antiinflammatory assay showed that all dose of the combination of the extract and honey reduced paw edema higher than the control group (p<0.05), and the best antiinflammatory activity was shown by combination 3. The antiinflamatory activity of all dose was similar to Na-diclofenac at a dose of 4.5. mg/kg bw.
Conclusion. Combination of water extract of Anredera cordifolia and honey has potency in wound healing and it may be because of its antiinflammatory response.
