In this talk, I describe my own research, as well as that of many other anthropologists, as a perspective on mental health and illness which brings together issues of epistemology, ethics, and politics. I begin by situating this perspective in the context of the past fifty years of literature on the anthropology of mental health and illness. I then highlight a set of contemporary concerns for anthropologists of mental health, using two of my own projects as case studies: past research on alcoholism, drug addiction and treatment in post-Soviet Russia, and ongoing work on mental illness among undergraduates in the United States.
